Questions?

Group In-Class Activity:

Infographic Hunt

Identify some resources for data visualization and infographic work:

Pick 5 examples of data visualizations/charts/graphs/maps. What do you find most interesting?

  • Underlying subject matter.
  • Chart style.
  • Visual identity (color, typography, hierarchy, etc)

Design Lab #3:

Chart Analysis

  • Pick 5 examples of infographics/data visualizations from your in-class research.
  • Pick from the FT Visual Vocabulary chart which chart styles are utilized by your chosen examples (some examples might be more avant-garde than what is included in the FT Visual Vocabulary chart, so focus on how they use retinal variables).
  • Identify the data points that are being conveyed and the corresponding retinal variable type used to communicate those values. Consider quantitative ranges, categories, etc (so what does spatial placement, size, value, color, shape, orientation all individually communicate as data properties).
  • For each of the examples you find, include an image as well as a link to where you found it.
  • Submit your chart analysis work as a PDF to Brightspace.
